Quick verdict
Cloudways is the host we point people to when they’ve outgrown shared hosting but don’t want to run a server themselves. You pick a cloud provider — DigitalOcean, Vultr, AWS or Google Cloud — and Cloudways sets up, secures, patches and monitors the server for you. Your site gets dedicated resources instead of sharing a machine with hundreds of strangers, and you can scale up with a few clicks when traffic grows.
The trade-off is that it’s a different kind of product from a typical beginner host. There’s no free domain, no email included by default, and the dashboard talks about servers and applications rather than “my website”. Billing is pay-as-you-go with no long contract, which is refreshing, but the monthly cost starts higher than budget shared plans. Cloudways has been owned by DigitalOcean since 2022, and it still runs as its own platform.
Pick Cloudways DO 2GB for a busy WordPress site or a WooCommerce store that has outgrown shared hosting. If you’re launching your first blog, a cheaper shared host will serve you just as well for now.

Pricing & plans
Cloudways prices depend on the cloud provider and server size you choose. DigitalOcean servers are the most popular starting point because they’re the cheapest way in, and they’re the plans we track in the table below. The smallest server is fine for one modest site; most growing sites and stores are more comfortable one step up, on DO 2GB.
If you’re unsure, start small. Cloudways lets you resize a server later, so there’s little risk in choosing a smaller size first and moving up once you can see how much memory and CPU your site actually uses.
| Plan | Intro price | Renews at | Websites | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DO 1GB | $11/mo | $11/mo | Unlimited | Small sites |
| DO 2GBOur pick | $24/mo | $24/mo | Unlimited | Growing sites |
| DO 4GB | $46/mo | $46/mo | Unlimited | Stores, agencies |
Intro prices are for a billed monthly. Prices checked Oct 4, 2026 — Cloudways changes them often, so check the live price before you buy.
No prepay, no renewal jump
This is where Cloudways differs most from shared hosts. You’re billed monthly for the hours your server runs, so there’s no multi-year prepay to unlock a low price and no renewal shock later — the price you see is the price you keep paying. You can also host as many sites as the server can handle on one bill. Add-ons such as email, extra backups storage and premium support are billed separately, so budget for the ones you need. Speed test results
Cloudways servers come with a tuned stack out of the box: Nginx in front, Varnish for full-page caching, Redis or Memcached for object caching, and current PHP versions. For WordPress, its own Breeze plugin handles page caching and minification, and a Cloudflare Enterprise add-on is available if you want a CDN with edge caching. Because the CPU and memory are yours alone, a busy neighbor can’t slow your site down.
Average TTFB, 180 days
The chart above compares time to first byte across every host we track, measured from several regions on the same test site (see how we test). Keep in mind that Cloudways speed depends partly on you: picking a data center close to your visitors and choosing the right server size matter more here than on a shared host.
Uptime
Your uptime on Cloudways rests on two layers: the cloud provider’s hardware and network, and Cloudways’ own monitoring, which watches the server around the clock and can restart services automatically. The meter above shows what our monitor recorded. Read the Cloudways SLA for the current uptime commitment and how credits work if it’s missed.
Ease of use
Cloudways uses its own platform dashboard rather than cPanel. It’s clean and logical once you understand the split between servers and the applications that run on them, but it assumes you know a little about how hosting works. You won’t find a website builder or a setup wizard that holds your hand through DNS.
- Launching: pick a provider, server size and location, then install WordPress or WooCommerce in one step.
- Staging: one-click staging copies and pushes between staging and live on every plan.
- Backups: automatic server backups on a schedule you set, with on-demand backups before risky changes.
- Developer tools: SSH and SFTP access, Git deployment and team access for agencies and freelancers.
The one real hurdle is the first hour. Once your domain points to the server and SSL is switched on, day-to-day work happens inside WordPress, and the Cloudways panel becomes somewhere you visit for backups and scaling.
Customer support
Standard support is live chat and tickets, around the clock, and it’s included with every server. Agents are generally comfortable with server-level questions, which you’ll need now and then on a cloud platform. If you want faster responses, a dedicated account manager or help with deeper application issues, Cloudways sells premium support tiers as a paid add-on. There’s no phone line on the standard plan, and a large knowledge base covers most common tasks.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cloudways good for beginners?
It’s usable, but it isn’t built for first-timers. You’ll need to point your domain yourself and understand the difference between a server and an application. If that sounds daunting, start on a beginner-friendly shared host and move to Cloudways when you need more power.
Who owns Cloudways?
DigitalOcean acquired Cloudways in 2022. You can still choose servers from Vultr, AWS and Google Cloud as well as DigitalOcean.
Does Cloudways include email and a domain?
No. You register your domain elsewhere and point it to Cloudways. Email is available as a paid add-on, or you can use a separate email provider.
Can I try Cloudways before paying?
Yes. Cloudways offers a short free trial without a credit card, and after that you pay monthly for what you use. Confirm the current trial terms on their site before you sign up.
Is there a Cloudways coupon code?
See our Cloudways coupons page for the promo codes and credits we’ve checked recently.
